ProActive Sound logo

A little about the logo. I wanted to incorporate the ProActive Sound name into the Carvin sub + full range stack view. It's pretty simple right now. Will evolve over time for sure. But I think it's good to start with a simple version like the one pictured here (this is the original).

It actually shrinks pretty well too.

You can definitely read the words and still almost tell what the picture is.

Notice how the letter 'r' drops into the letter "A". I'll probably try to get the slanted lines at exactly the same angle when I have more time. I don't know if I can control the italics slope in Visio. A simple version like this one can be used to make up name-plates to put onto the speaker cabinets and other equipment, and bumper stickers. Also the simple red can be embroidered onto polo shirts.
Eventually there will be a full-color version, maybe with fuller looking lettering. This will be used on banners, T-shirts, etc. I want to also make an animated version with the subwoofer pumping at about 2 beats per second. Don't know how to make a .gif file yet but will get there eventually. When the sub pumps out, the lettering will have to squish a bit, but keeping the overall envelope of the logo the same size.

SPL Request

So I received a call from Chris this last Friday, guitarist from Shotgun. He is working on putting together a campsite jam in Ramona. There is a stage setup with AC power. The question was regarding the limit on SPL that the campsite allows. It is 90dB SPL measured at 50', A-weighted average. This certainly sounds pretty low for a hard-rock band, especially at 50' away from the stage. Maybe we can play some games with turning the PA speakers outward a bit for example. Of course the limiting factor is the drums, which you can't really turn down the volume without losing the energy of the music. We may have to scrub the campsite idea.

I have an SPL meter just for this reason, which I purchased prior to a party at a residence where the next-door neighbor was a chronic complainer. The idea was to have the meter handy to perform some measurements to show that the party was not exceeding the limits defined by the City of Poway. More on this later.

Anyway, I told Chris that we could set up the system and do some measurement using recorded music (a.k.a. DJ mode) next weekend because I was already booked this weekend. Another idea would be to take some measurements during our next rehearsal at EXP Studios in Escondido. The sound system there is about the same as ours (for now :-) and would give us a good idea of how loud 90dB SLP at 50'. I have a feeling we'll be very disappointed...

Blog setup

New blog! I had previously used a page on my website www.proactivesound.com to create a pseudo-blog. Not a real blog, but I was new to the website tool and found it easy to use for this. It was fine for a small number of posts, but eventually the tool reached it's limitation. Nuff said for today. Expect more posts soon with some real content.
